Marking History Channel is a web series of short historical videos discussing the incredible hidden stories within the thousands of historical highway markers across America. War, music, sports, national events, social change and heroic American figures are some of the topics that are covered.
WW2 Combat Photographers - Images Frozen in Time
Before 1941, many of the WW2 combat photographers started out as newspaper photographers or documentary cameramen. They captured America’s current events and social issues on film and those images were then distributed to the public via newspapers and magazines. During World War II, these same professional photographers put on a uniform and traded the safety of home life for the dangers on the battlefield.
Here are three notable war correspondents who documented World War II events, capturing powerful and iconic images that became synonymous with the era - Robert Capa, Joe Rosenthal and Margaret Bourke-White.

A single photograph can not only define a moment, it can define history. Throughout our periods of conflict, from the Civil War to the Gulf Wars, combat photographers played a crucial role in capturing the essence of these human battles. Their lenses not only documented the horrors of war but also became a medium through which the stories of soldiers and civilians, triumphs and tragedies, were ...

Besides piloting many Naval vessels and Coast Guard cutters during the War, the most important war-related job was planning and executing water-landing operations. It was the men from the Coast Guard who piloted those small Higgins boats, transporting Marines and sol...

Let’s face it. History would not be complete without a discussion about Doughnuts. During World War One, the Salvation Army sent approximately 200 women volunteers to France to provide snacks, supplies and morale to those homesick US troops. The “Doughnut Lassies”, as they were called, dodged bombs, gas attacks, and risked their lives to fry up doughnuts for the Doughboys fighting in the trench...

Wow I knew his history. But it's great to be reminded
Nice recap on some American's imperialism chapters.
LT.GEN PULLER MAKES PATTON SEEM LIKE A SISSY.
WHERE ARE THE HARD-AS-NAILS GENERALS? Now all that is LEFT ARE GENERALS LIKE SILLY MILLEY AND HIS WOKE ASS BUDDIES OR BUNKMATES!
Any fan of Chesty Puller should read the book (Fortunate Son) about his son, Lewis Jr, who became a Marine officer who served in Vietnam, was wounded by a booby-trapped 155mm shell, and spent years in recovery until tragically taking his own life. This was the only battle Chesty couldn't find a solution to.
Baloney, I think most decorated was Smedly Butler who penned "war is a racket".
Good night Chesty, wherever you are !
Lewis puller was the most decorated marine in history. Just based off of medals of honor that would be Dan Daly
New river N.C. is still there. As U.S.M.C. New River Air Station.
I think there is a Navy SEAL that won two Medal of Honor in one battle, he died in that battle but saved many fellow soldiers
Goodnight Chesty R.I.P
Double pitts to chesty. Rest in peace
With lead in my pencil and water
My Uncle, "Gunny Bob" received his Silver Star at Edson's Ridge on Guadalcanal and was a close friend of Chesty. GOD BLESS THE USMC. "Many are born but few are made."
He wrote and approved his own awards...
Ooh Rahhh, Semper Fidelis.
Great info and video.
Im not a bot
Thanks for your nice comments.
my dad was a ww2 glider pilot who got the air medal for d-day when he landed between the rows of a apple orchard ,he,his crew all walked away and he went on to germany across franche--his friend who i am named after died on d-day
11:19 - Hallelujah!! THANK YOU for pronouncing “Lejeune” properly!!!
Silly quote voice over lol
Makes this MARINE PROUD DONT FORGET Dan Daily😊😊😊😊😊
We desperately need the Gold standard again. If Trump really cares about America that's one thing he should do.
It’s ridiculous that the most decorated Marine was not promoted higher than he was!! He should have had several stars on his collar!
Sadly a lot of marines would call him a filthy bleeding heart liberal today. He was certainly left wing but his liberal leaning didn’t make him a bleeding heart.
I hate to say it, but this makes one wonder if US government agents were behind the Panamanian revolt against Colombia.
Goodnight Chesty Puller where ever you are
"well here's another fine mess you got me into"(Babe said this when they were in a mess). Stan Laurel and Oliver Norvell Hardy are the funniest comedians of the world.
I had the Honor of attending the ceremony at his grave site at Christ Church Cemetary, VA. on the USMC's 237th Birthday, Nov. 10th, 2012. Been a long time that I saw that many Dress Blues in one place. Semper Fidelis, and "Good Night Chesty, wherever you are"
he went straight from boot camp to being a DI??
You get to a point of extreme excellence of service that you shouldn't have to apologize for anything.
I remember reading a book about his life and in it there was an anecdote by one of his daughters when she was attending Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley Mass, one of the premier all women's schools in the US. The cab driver who picked her up to take her to the campus asked her what her name was and when she said Puller he asked if she was related to the famous Marine general. "He's my Dad, " she replied. Turned out the cab driver had served with Chesty on Guadalcanal. She relayed in her story about how proud she was that this guy fairly gushed about what a great man and great marine her father was.
Semper Fi Ooorah
There is no R in the general's last name
Quite ridiculous that the mistaken pronunciation of Lejeune’s name is manufactured in this film. The example of colonel is completely unsound, why the researcher did not refer to French pronunciations is beyond imagination. The film is well done, but the insisted manner of mispronouncing his name in the spirit of actually pronouncing it correctly, runs throughout the course of the film. The creators of the film actually had the nerve to confront his surviving, elderly daughter regarding the again, manufactured issue of pronunciation. A presumably retired Air Force General serving as the commandant of the Virginia Military Academy reinforces the ongoing farce-lending false authority to the ‘correct way to say it; the example of the pronunciation of colonel is completely off-base, that is for English, it is not the same in French; proper names are not pronounced for the convenience of an adopted language or culture. Porsche is an example that is often butchered in English, especially our American version of the language; bizarre. Well, done, film nonetheless.
Disgraceful that they didn’t give credit to the fact that Latina women were part of the unit too. www.nps.gov/articles/000/6888th.htm#:~:text=The%206888th%20Central%20Postal%20Directory%20Battalion%20was%20a%20mostly%20African,(WAAC).
During November 1868, Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey, built Union Pacific locomotives No. 116, No. 117, No. 118, No. 119, and No. 120. and The Jupiter steam locomotive was built in September 1868 by the Schenectady Locomotive Works of New York
Five Navy cross....not once but 5 times....serious gallantry
Semper Fidelis Chesty** may God Bless your soul !!!😀
General LeJeune changed the corps to what it is today. Semper fi
Eisenhower, patten ,MacArthur attacked their own. Had the army attack and kill the veterans. Political officers always. No loyalty to troops. We are just cannon fodder.
At these times the Medal of Honor was awarded for actions not of extraordinary bravery and heroism in combat. It cheapens the medal earned by true heroes that meet the high standards of the medal. Chesty the same with his navy crosses.
semper fi 🇺🇸
Wow, GREAT VIDEO, SHOWING HEROS ALL! John P.
Smedley Butler was the MOST decorated Marine of ALL TIME! This is Propaganda, to write Gen. Butler out of HISTORY, by those who want FOREVER WAR! ua-cam.com/video/74wrX8rKtzw/v-deo.html
The only US Mint (turns gold nuggets into coins) not in the US was in the Phillipines. Arthur MacArtur led the attack on the land.
he spent time in the brig too, even said you're not a real Marine until you do
Salute!
I think 3x Navy crosses he should be able to trade them in on one MoH ! 🇺🇸🫡🙏
Kind of amazing, really, that I had never heard of General Puller until I enlisted in the Corps in 1977. After Boot Camp, I went to the Camp Pendleton library and got a book titled, “Marines!” that was all about Chesty’s life and it’s a fascinating read. After that I was hooked on Chesty. It made me mad that I let my Recruiter, Sgt R. Higginbotham, talk me out of enlisting as an 0311 and becoming a 7041 (Aviation Operations Specialist) 🙄 instead. But it all worked out, though the highest decoration I received was a Navy Achievement Medal. I do have to say that I’ve never understood why they haven’t made a major motion picture based on his life. Semper Fi, Marines!!! ✝️🇺🇸🦅🌎⚓️✌️😉💯❤️
